The Making of a Flagship

What does it take for a bass to remain a flagship model for over a decade?

Becoming a flagship is not defined by a single moment, but by years of earning the trust of the musicians who continue to choose it.

Since its introduction in 2015, the V7 has continued to evolve through thoughtful updates that enhance comfort, playability, and versatility while preserving the qualities players have valued from the beginning.

This is the story of the V7, and how more than a decade of thoughtful development has shaped the instrument players continue to choose today.

2015: The Birth of the V7

The Sire V7 was introduced in 2015 with a clear goal: to offer a high-quality J-style bass that combined professional performance, reliable craftsmanship, and excellent value for players.

That vision became the foundation of Sire's collaboration with Marcus Miller. In an interview, Marcus recalled that the idea was to build a high-quality bass that is more accessible, giving more musicians the opportunity to own an instrument they could grow with. He often met parents looking for a first bass for their children without the cost of a high-end instrument. For Marcus, however, one condition mattered above all: if his name was going to be on the instrument, it had to meet his standards for quality.

The V7 quickly earned recognition for its playability and overall feel. In his 2015 review, producer and bassist Adam Dorn observed that a great instrument should sound and feel good even before it's plugged into an amplifier.

His early impression of the V7 highlighted its balanced feel across the neck and its natural resonance, reinforcing the strength of the instrument from the very beginning.

At a time when many players had to choose between affordability and professional performance, the V7 showed that they could have both and that became the foundation for every improvement that followed.

2016: Expanding the V7 Family

As more musicians explored different genres and playing styles, many also developed distinct tonal preferences.

Following the success of the V7, the lineup expanded with the introduction of the V7 Vintage. Inspired by Marcus Miller's own vintage-style bass, it gave players another tonal option while preserving the quality, playability, and versatility that had already defined the V7.

One of the defining differences between the two models is their pickup spacing. The V7 follows a '60s pickup spacing, placing the bridge pickup slightly closer to the neck for a fuller, warmer response. The V7 Vintage adopts a '70s pickup spacing, moving the bridge pickup closer to the bridge to produce a tighter low end, more pronounced mids, and the added bite associated with many classic basses from that era.

Rather than replacing the V7, the V7 Vintage broadened the lineup by giving musicians the freedom to choose the sound that best matched their playing style while preserving the identity that had made the V7 successful.

2018: The Second Generation

To meet the evolving expectations of musicians, the second generation of the V7 was introduced in 2018, focusing on meaningful refinements that enhanced the overall playing experience while preserving the qualities players had already come to appreciate.

Among the most significant improvements was the introduction of Edgeless™ rolled fingerboard edges, giving the neck a smoother and more comfortable feel. A satin neck finish improved hand movement, while medium jumbo frets provided a more confident fretting experience. The electronics also evolved with the introduction of the Marcus Super-J Revolution pickups and updates to the Heritage-3 preamp, delivering greater clarity, responsiveness, and tonal flexibility. Hardware enhancements further improved the instrument's overall usability and reliability.

2026: The New Generation of the V7

Modern musicians expect more from their instruments than ever before. Beyond great tone and playability, they look for reliability, durability, balance, and the confidence to perform in any setting. The New Generation of the V7 was developed to meet those expectations, building on years of continuous development while introducing thoughtful updates throughout the instrument.

One of the most significant updates is the redesigned New Gen neck system, featuring a revised neck profile with Edgeless™ rolled fingerboard edges, stainless steel frets, lightweight aluminum tuning machines for improved balance, and Luminlay side dots for better visibility on stage. Together, these updates deliver greater comfort and enhanced playability, making the V7 feel even more natural in the player's hands. The electronics also received meaningful updates with newly voiced Marcus Super-J Revolution pickups and a streamlined Heritage-3 preamp, delivering improved clarity, better note separation, and a more responsive playing experience while retaining the tonal flexibility of the active/passive system.

The New Gen lineup also expands player options with roasted maple neck configurations, additional finish and fingerboard combinations, and improved weight consistency across production. These updates provide players with more choices while ensuring a dependable experience from one instrument to another.

Bringing together more than a decade of continuous development, the New Generation combines improvements in overall player experience into the most complete version of the V7 to date.

Growing with Players

The story of the V7 is more than a timeline of new models, updated specifications, or expanded finish options. It is the story of an instrument that has grown alongside the musicians who continue to shape it. Preserve what works, listen to players, and improve what matters. That approach has guided the V7 from the very beginning and continues to shape every generation that follows. That is why the V7 has remained Sire's flagship J-style bass for over a decade. As new generations of players continue to pick up the V7, its story continues, built on the same foundation that began in 2015.
