marcusmiller-jazz-bass-img08 Swamp Ash

Premium swamp ash tone wood is usually found in higher priced instruments. Swamp ash tone wood is known to produce a well balanced tone. It is highly resonant and offers a nice balance of pleasant highs, firm lows, and a slightly scooped midrange which is great for slap playing. The characteristics of this wood enable players to emulate Marcus Miller’s tone a step further.

marcusmiller-jazz-bass-img09 North American Alder

A popular choice for most bass guitars is the North American Alder. Other basses at this price range commonly use Basswood or Agathis tone wood but Sire Guitars chooses the traditional North American Alder which is known for its strong clear full-bodied sound, with beefy mids and excellent lows that is perfect for the traditional jazz bass sound.

Nut is one of the most important parts of the guitar that influences the performance, playability, and tone of the instrument. Depending on the quality of the material and elasticity, the nut can improve the sound or degrade the sound. Although bone nut is more costly and harder to work with, it is considered to deliver more balanced, clearer and smoother tone than plastic or eurite material.

I missed the 1st round of ordering and got in on the special round of Natural colored 5-string bass from Sire. Prior to ordering, I checked out all the written and video reviews I could find online. I couldn’t find any negative words for the Sire MM V7. I’ve had many basses over the years including numerous boutique basses as well as at least one of all of Leo Fender’s designs. Here’s my major thought. If you don’t have one of these yet, get one, now! The sound quality, the build quality, and price point of these instruments make for an unheralded breakthrough in the current bass guitar marketplace.

The string-spacing at the nut is great and commendable all the way up neck. Tuning pegs do their job impressively. The pickups are clearly-voiced and articulate, giving the player the variety of tonal variations in conjunction with passive/active 18v preamp. The bridge is solid, effective and easily adjustable to your desired preference but note, this instrument is going to sound good right out of the box or should I say case since it is shipped with useable and neck-supporting gig bag. The finishes are clean and top notch. This instrument rivals others costing 2-3 times as much. If you love a great Jazz Bass-styled instrument, the Sire Marcus Miller V7 is an incredible value.

I have to say this is one of the best basses I have ever had. I have had lots but the tone and feel I get from this bass is incredible. I have the MM Fender Jazz and prefer this bass over my Fender. If you are looking for a quality bass for a great price buy one today. You won’t be sorry!

I never write reviews but after getting my V7 5string I felt compelled. First of all, Mickey called and emailed me to let me when my order would leave. From that day it took 4 days from CA to OH where I live. I have a Lakland 55-02, which I love plus owned many basses(Bassmod k535, Fender Deluxe Jazz Mexican & American, etc) this has whatever you want. I still can’t believe the price. I have three friends that tried it out and they are all about to order one. Sire thank you for building this bass. I had high expectation and was still blown away…. If you want a starter bass, Buy one, if you are looking for something versatile but fat meaty lows and well accentuated highs, BUY ONE. If you have many other axes and not sure BUY ONE NOW!!!! you might retire the rest of your collection

I bought this bass mostly out of curiosity and I was not prepared for how good this thing plays and sounds. The first night I had it, I took it on a gig, along with another bass just in case I wasn’t happy with it. I never played the other bass. I played the Sire V7 all night and couldn’t have been happier. I’ve shown it to other bass player friends and they can’t believe what it cost. This bass could easily be the only bass anyone would ever need. If you are on the fence about whether to buy one or not, just do it! You won’t regret it, I promise!

    • Thank you John for those comments! We desire to bring our players to the instrument they always dreamed of at an affordable price. We can’t thank you enough for your support. Cheers to you! :)

Ok so I’ve had this bass for over 6 months now (with an alder/rosewood V7 on the way) and I’m still in love with it. I play it practically on every gig I have. From church, bars/clubs, festivals, studio recording purposes etc., gospel, r&b, rock, blues, jazz I’m here to tell you this instrument flat out delivers! I play it every single day and have since sold 2 of my other basses and gave a 3rd one away! Lol…I cannot wait for my alder/rosewood version to get here! Big thanx to Sire and Marcus.

I received my bass (V7) on the 13th of November 2015, I had a gig on the night that I received it, unpacked it, put it in the car with the bass that I was using that night, got to the gig tuned it did the sound check, and WOW the sound, the feel, the finish were GREAT right out of the box, the next day I left for 5 gigs in 4 cities in 4 days, the V7 fit perfect in my road case, needless to say it performed flawlessly, I’ve been playing it on every gig since, I been playing for years, own about 25 basses give or take a few, my only regret about this bass is that I don’t own 2, I’m ordering another. Thanks

I’ve had the maple fretboard/swamp ash body 5-string V-7 for a few months, and I can honestly say that all the hype is true. The build quality is great; all of the wood looks great, all of the hardware is high quality/precision made, the fretjob and the overall feel of the neck is awesome. The paint is great, I can’t find a single flaw in it. I was worried that the gloss paint on the neck would slow my hand down but somehow it doesn’t, it’s not quite as “fast” as a satin finished neck but it’s close to it. As far as tone goes, it’s got that great jazz bass tone, and the onboard preamp is pretty awesome. It’s very powerful (a slight adjustment goes a long way), and you can boost AND cut with it. I don’t plan on replacing the stock pickups, I really think they went all-out with them. The pick guard is immaculate. And yes, the bass is decently heavy. But it’s nothing out of the ordinary.

The bass was shipped very professionally, and the gig bag it comes in is the nicest gig bag I’ve ever owned. It’s really well padded (it holds its’ shape, it’s not one of those cheap floppy gigbags) it has big pockets, and it has straps so that you can carry it like a backpack.

The bass arrived with a nearly perfect setup, the neck action and saddle height were great. I didn’t touch the truss rod or the saddles until I took it on a road trip from Virginia to Missouri and back. When I got back I measured the action, I ended up only giving the truss rod about a 1/4 – 1/2 turn to get it back to normal, so I think that really speaks for the sturdiness of the bass and the quality of the wood that Sire used. The bridge is dense and solid, but like the majority of bass bridges it isn’t a locking bridge, so over time the saddles will stray out of adjustment. I haven’t tried the string-through option yet, but the option is there if you want it. The tuners do their job well, and they have that awesome massive vintage look. The bone nut looks well made, and it lets the strings move without inhibition when you’re tuning. The string-tree on the 5-string is really nice, it spans across all 5 strings so that they break at the same angle and distance. Assuming that you’re using quality strings and you make sure to string it properly, the B-string sounds and feels great, like a natural extension of the other strings. I’m picky about the string-to-saddle contact, especially on the B-string, and luckily these saddles do the job nicely, all 5 strings seem to contact and exit the saddles very solidly, I think that’s one reason why the B-string is nice on this bass.

The knobs are just your basic black plastic vintage style knobs with little white direction indicators. The pots all spin smoothly. The passive/active switch is nice and stiff. The output jack is simple and basic, it gives a satisfying and solid click when you insert a cable. The strap buttons are pretty straight-forward, they seemed to be installed securely. The bass balances pretty well, there IS a little bit of neck dive but I wouldn’t consider it out of the average. I think that the heavy swamp ash body helps to balance out the big headstock and heavy tuners. The neck is bolted on perfectly. The strings are evenly spaced down the neck and pass perfectly over their respective pickup poles on their way to the bridge; no wacky misaligned strings/pickups like you see on some bolt-ons. The block inlays and the binding are both beautiful, and when I run my fingers over them, they feel smooth and naturally flush with the rest of the bass.

That’s all that I can think of, feel free to ask any questions about the bass. I gave the bass 5-stars, I really do think that this is the best deal I’ve ever gotten on a bass. I’m not saying that the V7 is better than every other bass on the market, I’m saying that the bang-for-your-buck is unbelievable. I think Sire is extremely impressive for being able to keep the price so low. And I think that if you want a bass built better than this, you’re going to be spending a LOT more money. Sire really does deserve a pat on the back.

    • Hello Dustin! Our many thanks for the detailed review on our basses. We welcome you to Sire Revolution!

I had my V7 alder 5 string since January 2016 and it’s my go to bass some times I double gig bag My M3 & V7 for various types & sounds. I love them both. I want one more Sire bass but not sure which one. Im waiting on more compared V7 ash 5 string vs. V7 vintage ash 5 string bass. IS there real a huge difference in sound? I can only get one more. I hear alot about the vintage and ash v7, which way to go I don’t know yet. If not much difference then of course I choose the lowest price V7 ash. Any extra info. input of my next sire purchase. Thanks Sire Marcus Miller. Best quality, sound, durability, price, feel, and etc. I’ve ever played and owned.
